Summary (no major spoilers)

Mateo and Lucas, who are best friends, go out to party together on a hot summer night. During the night, Mateo meets a girl named Lucia, and she commits an act that will irrevocably alter the course of their lives. Consequently, Mateo and Lucas embark on a profound search that is both physical and deeply personal. True to form, the film exposes sexuality fearlessly and without labels, ultimately highlighting the beauty of friendship, innocence, love, and sex.

Reception and festivals

*El intercambio* has been recognized on the international circuit and screened at several prominent LGBTQ+ and international film festivals. Its notable festival selections include:

  • Outfest: Los Angeles Gay & Lesbian Film Festival (2023)
  • Guadalajara International Film Festival (2024)
  • Melbourne Queer Film Festival (2024)
  • Chéries-Chéris (2025)

Relevance to gay cinephilia and the history of queer cinema

  • Marco Berger's signature tension: The short fits perfectly into Berger's wider filmography, which consistently explores the ambiguous boundaries between male friendship and homoerotic desire through prolonged glances and unspoken tension.
  • Unlabeled sexuality: It reflects a highly modern approach to queer cinema by presenting male sexuality and intimacy as a fluid, universal experience free of strict, restrictive labels.

Context notes

As a co-production between Argentina, Puerto Rico, and Uruguay, the film stands as a great example of collaborative Latin American queer cinema. It packs Berger's trademark aesthetic into a concise, 24-minute runtime, making it essential viewing for fans of his feature films like *Taekwondo* or *Hawaii*.

Looking for gay-themed movies? You're in the right place.

The Cinesexual presents the largest and most stable free collection of gay-themed movies anywhere. Yes, free!

I maintain this project in an effort to preserve worldwide gay film culture, particularly gay short films and documentaries, which most people don’t get to see. Many of these movies would disappear forever without preservation, before the people who want to see them, need to see them, get to see them.

Some people live in countries where these films are blocked. Some people are poor. Most people don’t have nearly enough money to pay for all the services that may or may not host these movies. Most people don’t have the time or the expertise to seek them out. Most people don't know how many great gay movies exist outside the mainstream.

This collection is for them, for you.
