HBO’s sex doc, Private Dicks – Men Exposed, employs some smart filmmaking strategies, such as not always shooting full-body (In fact, we never see the porn star’s penis.), teasing us about the sexual orientations and gender identities of those interviewed and using stock footage, vintage films and illustrations as bridges between the sections. It’s funny, positive and balanced.
Still, it peters out towards the end and I got the feeling that the filmmakers weren’t all that satisfied with the material they got: A couple of the guys simply talk too much, the doc is awfully short and although it ends on a upbeat note, it also struck me as rather precious.
Still worth a look, though. Kinsey would have approved of most of it, since it subtly reinforces one of his principal themes: Sexuality varies and that’s the essence of its nature, putting it therefore beyond judgment.
