Chucho E. Quintero

Chucho E. Quintero is a queer writer/director born and raised in Mexico.

For my money, along with Julián HernándezAlong with Chucho E. Quintero, Julián Hernández is one of the world's premier chroniclers of gay male life. His gay films tend toward art-house cine More, Chucho is the most important cinematic chronicler of gay male life in the world right now, as far as I know. His most recent short, Panquecito (available for free on Vimeo), playfully and artfully depicts a hilarious hookup between three guys, two of whom compete for trade. It’s a strong statement of sexual pride and identity and it far exceeds expectations for what young gay male cinema should do and be.

His previous speculative experiment, Velociraptor, performed similar small miracles. His latest feature, These Peculiar Days, packs so many relationship turns and twists into its narrative that it almost outdoes its antecedents, such as The Big Chill or Diner, at least in terms of detailed characterizations, all while modernizing the sexual dynamics.

Anything Chucho does is worth watching so I can’t wait for him to finish his first Stateside, English-language project, Kitty. He deserves to get notice from the big leagues. “Chucho E. Quintero was born in Río Blanco, Veracruz, Mexico in 1989. He has studied with teachers such as Paula Markovitch, Ignacio Ortiz, Jaime Humberto Hermosillo, and Jorge Ayala Blanco. He has worked as a translator/interpreter for several Mexican film festivals since 2009, and he has subtitled films for several international filmmakers. In 2011, he premiered his first feature called Six Pack (2011) at the 15th Mix Mexico Film Festival, where he won the IMJUVE Award for Best Director Under 30 for his short film, Félix et le poisson (2011). He briefly attended Centro de Diseño, Cine y Televisión, where he shot his latest short film, 100 metros estilo libre (2013). His feature length film, Velociraptor (2014), won the Jury Prize for Best Feature at the 17th Miami Gay & Lesbian Film Festival in 2015, and got picked up by TLA Releasing for international distribution.
