Based on a short story by Bruce Nugent, I found the fantasy tableaux of Smoke, Lilies and Jade to be ravishing, sexy, and suggestive. In addition, the inspired voiceover narration by Billy Porter is certainly more successful than in Fassbinder’s Querelle, not least because the short’s visual and narrative form as well as the acting style draw from and expand the source text rather than working against it. My only complaint is that it’s too short; I wanted more.
