Film note: 100 Years of Men in Love

This is worth seeing if you aren’t going to buy or at least thumb through the book. [#CommissionEarned] After all, these photographs are interesting, valuable, and often beautiful in and of themselves. However, the sentimental and often laughable projections and unscholarly suppositions of what’s going on in these images of men together culled willy-nilly from the past, combined with the wall-to-wall, obsessively twee Hallmark Channel soundtrack and the silly animated overlays, might drive you as crazy as they did me. I’m just glad that the two gay men opining about their specialized antiquing weren’t young academics, in which case I would have been tortured by queer theory pronouncements instead of just bored by innocent, old-gay pretensions. Lots of folks seem to love this, though, so don’t mind me.
