This past week, Olivia Newton-John passed away following a protracted battle with breast cancer. She was the first singer-celebrity that I had a crush on when I was a teenager. I had all her albums, rejoiced when they were popular, and saw her live once when she played the Indiana State Fair in 1975. I was wearing an Olivia t-shirt painted by a neighbor. It was his rendition of the cover of ONJ’s single cover, If You Love Me, Let Me Know. (Don’t she look all sexy in that denim shirt?) I think she noticed me when I screamed out her name between sets. Oh Lordie.
What fags my age who are also into movies remember is that she was our ally her entire career and, among other roles, guest-starred in Randal Kleiser‘s 1996 AIDS drama, It’s My Party, when supporting such a project was still a risky career move.
