Marina Abramovi?: The Artist Is Present

Dokumentarfilme über Kunst und Künstler sind meiner Meinung nach notwendiger als die meisten anderen Themen, mit denen sich Filmemacher befassen. Obwohl fast jeder moderne Kulturschaffende von den sofortigen globalen Kommunikationsnetzwerken profitiert hat - der Schriftsteller, der Musiker, sogar der Fotograf - haben die meisten anderen Künstler das nicht. Während Fotos von beeindruckenden Gebäuden den Architekten gerecht werden und es viele Architektur-Porno-Blogs gibt, wie erlebt jemand die Auswirkungen von Raum on the body and in the mind when it’s on the other side of the world?

Also Mein Architekt goes farther than any YouTube video could, but I’d wager walking inside the Jatiyo Sangshad Bhaban Das erste Mal, als ich den Raum von Joan Miró im MoMa betrat, verschlug es mir die Sprache und ich wurde ganz still.

Und Henry Darger nie viral gehen könnte und das ist wirklich ein Trost.

Das Internet kommt in dem Dokumentarfilm nicht ohne Grund vor Der Künstler ist anwesend. Marina Abramovi? — the self-described grandmother of performance art — spent three months, 7.5 hours a day, 6 days a week, sitting in a chair in the Museum of Modern Art’s atrium, inviting to sit in front of her in silence and stare anyone who wanted to. What Abramovi? does in this not-really solo, not-at-all virtual performance, depicted in some detail in this film, is to suggest that the Internet, this filter that is supposed to efficiently focus the world’s attention on what’s important and valuable, to provide solace and connection, is not enough.

Kein Wunder, dass vielen, die sich auf diese Weise mit Abramović auseinandersetzten, am Ende die Tränen über das Gesicht liefen. Wie Kurator Klaus Biesenbach sagt, war es für viele, die vor Marina Abramović saßen, eine Gelegenheit, zu erleben die volle Aufmerksamkeit eines anderen Menschen und zeigt auf, wie selten ein solches Ereignis ist, trotz des ständigen Angebots an Aufmerksamkeit, das die sozialen Medien versprechen. Es gibt jedoch keine falschen Likes oder Pluspunkte, sondern nur einfache Wertschätzung: Der Künstler ist wirklich präsent.

I watched the film twice trying to assess the quality and origins of my own responses to it — not as moved as those shown weeping but affected nonetheless — and decided that, while the “charismatic space” Abramovi? created could be critiqued from several different positions, what I couldn’t deny was its power and her affirmation of what I have always considered as the essential role of artists in human societies — as shamans, oracles, to be living lenses we can look in the eye and find ourselves mirrored, reflecting back our suppressed experiences, our common pain.
