Love of Siam is one of those obscure gay movies I found on Torrent-Foren in the mid-2000s but had never heard of before and have rarely if ever seen mentioned in the mainstream press, gay or otherwise, proving that if you only pay attention to official channels, you’re getting an incomplete picture, at best, of world [gay] cinema.
Yet this film, which I wrote about here, won Best Picture in Thailand and routinely gets reuploaded, reseeded, and relisted by gay fans from all over, who seem not to care that it’s ignored just about everywhere else.
This coming November will mark the 15th Anniversary of Die Liebe zu Siam, but I’m streaming it early.
Love of Siam (Thai: รักแห่งสยาม, RTGS: Rak Haeng Sayam, pronounced [rák hɛ̀ŋ sà.jǎːm]) is a 2007 Thai multi-layered romantic–Drama-Film geschrieben und geleitet von Chookiat Sakveerakul. The film tells a story of love, friendship and family. The film was released in Thailand on November 22, 2007. The fact that the gay romance storyline was not apparent from the film’s promotional material initially caused controversy, but the film was received with critical acclaim and proved financially successful. It dominated Thailand’s 2007 film awards season, winning the Best Picture category in all major events.
